He should at least tell them to use alternate picking. There’s no reason to not practice this from the beginning.

It’s just a finger dexterity issue. Try going from little finger to first finger… then first finger to little finger. Remember to relax your hand.
You just need to keep practicing, you’ll probably find the issue is with your second finger, not your third, when you work backwards.
Also remember you can fret notes between the frets.

it depends on what you’re playing. If you’re playing classical guitar fingepicking style you use fingers if you for example play electric guitar solos or 1 note riffs a pick is better. hope it helped.

Important note, when playing try not to bend your wrist to much to prevent future problems.
Also using your thumb behind the neck and push with your thumb to help press the strings.
