If you would like to know more about how to play acoustic guitar strumming. Read on.
Isn't it amazing? The very first thing someone will do when they pick up an acoustic guitar is strum it.
It doesn't matter if they've never picked one up before or if they've ever played a guitar, it just seems the natural thing to do. And it is. The acoustic guitar lends itself to being strummed.
Basic strumming patterns are not difficult to learn and will add richness and texture to your playing.
The natural way to start strumming your guitar is in an downward and upward fashion. A down strum (towards the floor) followed by an up strum (towards your chest).
No matter how advanced you become at strumming, these patterns will always consist of up and down strums. Variations in the patters and in the timing of your strumming is what will enable you to sound so good so be sure that you strum directly over the sound hole and that all of the strings are sounding clearly.
You can think of your strumming arm as a sort of a pendulum, with your elbow at the top. your arm should move up and down from your elbow in a steady, smooth swinging action.
You should turn your strumming wrist down slightly while strumming down and up slightly while strumming up. Make sure that you don't keep your wrist stiff while strumming.
The more basic patters of strumming tend to be made up of even up and down strokes. You can play soft or hard. Fast or slow, but try to practice playing evenly. A metronome, either mechanical or software based, will help you keep tempo. Make sure that the volume of your down strums and up strums are the same but don't strum too hard, as this can cause the strings to rattle and create sounds that you just don't want!
Once you're comfortable playing at an even tempo, try doubling the speed of your strumming and notice what a dramatic effect this has on what you are playing.
OK. So once you have mastered the basic patters of strumming it will be time to spread your wings and move on to some more advanced stuff.
Instead of the basic up and down strum try 2 downs, 1 up and 2 downs and repeat. You will notice how different this patten sounds and I'm sure you will immediately think of songs that fit around this pattern of strumming.
There are many patterns of strumming to learn, some quite simple and others fairly complicated, but as in all things, just move from one stage of learning to the next and you will soon learn them.
Practice, practice, practice and you will be amazed by just how much your guitar playing will come alive.
